I do not rate schools and I will not tell you which district is better. That is a call only you can make for your own kids, and no agent should steer you on it. What I can do is tell you exactly which district serves any address you are looking at, and point you to the state's numbers so you can read them yourself.
What follows is the layout. Sizes are rounded from the most recent federal enrollment counts.
The districts
| District | Covers | Size |
|---|---|---|
| Lawton Public Schools | Most of Lawton, part of Medicine Park, rural central Comanche County, and families living on Fort Sill | About 14,000 students. Three high schools, three middle schools, around fifteen elementaries. |
| Elgin Public Schools | Elgin, Lakeside Village, Lawtonka Acres, and parts of Edgewater Park and Medicine Park | About 2,500 students on four campuses |
| Cache Public Schools | Cache and the country around it, including some addresses inside Lawton city limits | About 2,000 students |
| Fletcher Public Schools | Fletcher and the rural area northeast of Lawton | Under 500 students |
| Geronimo Public Schools | Geronimo and the area south of Lawton, including some addresses inside Lawton city limits | A little over 300 students |
There are smaller districts in the county too. Bishop and Flower Mound are elementary districts on the edges of Lawton whose older students go on to Lawton Public Schools. Sterling, Indiahoma and Chattanooga cover the far corners. If a listing mentions one of those, ask me and I will run it down.
Lawton Public Schools
The three high schools are Eisenhower, Lawton High, and MacArthur. The middle schools are Central, Eisenhower, and MacArthur. Which ones your kids attend depends on where in town the house is.
The district has an address lookup that shows the attendance zone for any house. It is linked from lawtonps.org as the School Locator. Use it on every address before you get attached to a house.
If you live on post
Families in on-post housing are in Lawton Public Schools. Kids on post attend Freedom Elementary, which is on Fort Sill, then Central Middle School, then Lawton High. Families who will be moving on post within 90 days can enroll at Freedom ahead of the move.
Elgin, Cache, Fletcher and Geronimo
Elgin runs a lower elementary, an upper elementary, a middle school, and a high school. The district reaches west to the lake communities by Lawtonka.
Cache splits the early years across a primary school, an intermediate school, and a 5th and 6th grade center, then a middle school and a high school.
Fletcher is an elementary and a combined junior and senior high. Geronimo is a single small district, elementary through high school.
The smaller the district, the smaller the graduating class. Some families want exactly that and some want the opposite. Neither one is the right answer for everybody.
The lines do not follow the city limits
This is where people get surprised.
- Medicine Park is split. The Medicine Park district closed in 1990 and the state divided it between Lawton and Elgin. Two houses in the same town can be in different districts.
- Some Lawton addresses are in Cache or Geronimo schools. The county's tax rolls carry separate rates for Lawton city addresses in the Cache district and in the Geronimo district. A Lawton mailing address does not settle it.
- The lake communities north of town are Elgin. Lakeside Village and Lawtonka Acres are in the Elgin district even though they feel closer to Medicine Park.
The district also changes the property tax bill, because most of the tax goes to schools. Confirm the district on the address before you write an offer. It is easy to assume and expensive to assume wrong.
Transfers, and how the law treats military kids
Oklahoma has had open transfer since January 2022. You can ask any district in the state to take your child, at any time of year. A district can turn down a request for three reasons: no room at that grade and school, a discipline history, or a record of absences.
There is one line in that law worth knowing. A child of an active-duty parent cannot be denied a transfer for lack of space. If you are turned down you have ten days to appeal to the local board.
Oklahoma is also part of the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children. That is what smooths out course placement, records, and graduation requirements when your kid changes schools in the middle of the year.
Where to read the real data
- oklaschools.com is the Oklahoma State Department of Education's report card site. Every school and district is on it.
- The Fort Sill School Liaison Office is in the Welcome Center, Building 4700 on Mow-Way Road. Helping military families with school transitions is the whole job, and it is free.
- Every district has an enrollment office that answers questions directly. All of them deal with mid-year military transfers constantly.
If a district boundary affects resale value on a specific house, that is market data and I can show you the numbers. Which classroom is right for your kid is not something I will weigh in on.
